About Me

I am a travel and feature writer who has escaped Pittsburgh, PA for Vieques, Puerto Rico.  My current work appears in the Washington Post and AFAR. In the Before Time I contributed to National Geographic Traveler and inflight magazines Hemispheres, Delta Sky, and Alaska Airlines Beyond.  My work has also appeared in in newspapers including the New York TimesPittsburgh Post-Gazette, and USA Today; and online at National Geographic Traveler’s  Intelligent Travel, Architectural Record, USA Today, Pittsburgh Magazine and Pittsburgh Quarterly; and online at National Geographic Traveler’s  former blog, Intelligent Travel. 

Then there are my books: contributions to National Geographic's Places of a Lifetime (2015), Four Seasons of Travel (2013), Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways (2013), and Best of the World (2012). The 13th edition of Pennsylvania: Off the Beaten Path for Globe Pequot Press (2022) is my seventh update of this quirky little guide. Past titles include Fun With the Family: Pennsylvania (Globe Pequot Press, seventh edition Fall 2009), and Pennsylvania’s Forbes Trail: Gateways and Getaways Along the Legendary Route From Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (Taylor Trade Press, May 2008) with Burton K. Kummerow and R. Scott Stephenson. I also contributed to Travelers Tales Prague and the Czech Republic: True Stories (Travelers Tales, March 2006). I made my US network television debut as a contestant on "Jeopardy!" in 2012.

I'm a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and have received an Award of Excellence from Destination Canada for reporting on Montreal's circus scene.
