About Me

I am a feature and travel writer based in Pittsburgh, PA.  My work appears in National Geographic Traveler; the inflight magazines Hemispheres and Delta Sky and other magazines, including Architectural Record and Pittsburgh Quarterly; in newspapers including the New York Times, Washington PostPittsburgh Post-Gazette, and USA Today; and online at National Geographic Traveler’s now-defunct Intelligent Travel.

I'm a contributing writer at Pittsburgh Quarterly, Pittsburgh Magazine and h, the quarterly magazine of the Heinz Endowments. Then there are my books: contributions to National Geographic's Places of a Lifetime (2015), Four Seasons of Travel (2013), Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways (2013), and Best of the World (2012). The 12th edition of Pennsylvania: Off the Beaten Path for Globe Pequot Press (2016) is my sixth update of this quirky little guide. Past titles include Fun With the Family: Pennsylvania (Globe Pequot Press, seventh edition Fall 2009), and Pennsylvania’s Forbes Trail: Gateways and Getaways Along the Legendary Route From Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (Taylor Trade Press, May 2008) with Burton K. Kummerow and R. Scott Stephenson. I also contributed to Travelers Tales Prague and the Czech Republic: True Stories (Travelers Tales, March 2006). I made my US television debut as a contestant on "Jeopardy!" in 2012.

I'm a member of the Society of American Travel Writers.  I received a 2016 Award of Excellence from Destination Canada for reporting on Montreal's circus scene. Thus far in 2017, I've been to New Orleans, Winnipeg, and East Anglia in the UK; last year, it was Hong Kong, Myanmar, Thailand, Bermuda and Montreal.  Check my Seen page for updates or follow me on Twitter.
